No Way Are You An Introvert!
I always thought I was a bit of a weird kid: while I had fun taking part in group activities and team sports with other children, when it came to playing with toys I always preferred to play with my Micronauts or (twelve-inch) G.I. Joe figurines by myself. It always felt a bit selfish to me, but it wasn't until I had kids of my own that I discovered why. When I'd drive one of my kids to school alongside a few of their classmates in our minivan, my child would listen to music the entire time through their headphones, ignoring the conversations going on around them. At the time I thought it a little rude, but then I realized that-- as an introvert-- my child needed the solitude of listening to music during that ride to school to build up their stores of energy for a day of forced social interaction that they could not not participate in. When I first got into selling, I didn't know an introvert from an elbow, and just assumed that making calls for hours on end, or giving presentations to prospective customers, was naturally exhausting.
About a decade ago, I started fishing...like, really fishing. I first borrowed a beat-up kayak, then ended up winning a newer one in a raffle. I added a couple fishing pole holders, bought a fish finder, then added a few more pole holders, then started to really expand the number of fishing poles and tackle that I'd take with me on typical outings. I then purchased an Old Town PDL kayak, added even more pole holders and bait boxes, then started to fish 2-3+ mornings per week before work, averaging 75+ trips per year on open as well as hard water. Through the course of this obvious expanding addiction, I found that my performance and energy when selling only improved. After much introspection, I realized that I am, in fact, an introvert! But introverts can learn to counter their natural inclination to NOT make that call, or introduce themselves at networking functions. I've been able to do it for my entire career, and I'm happy to share my methods with anyone in sales that is also hiding their true introvert nature!
